A taxi driver has told how he feared for his life after a passenger pulled a knife on him in Melbourne’s CBD overnight.
Just after 2.30am today a man flagged down driver Maninder Singh outside a McDonald’s restaurant on Queens Parade, Fitzroy North.
The man refused to pre-pay for a fare to Frankston, threatening the Mr Singh and producing a knife.



The victim told 9NEWS he feared for his life.

“He tried to kill me tried to stab me in the chest,” the victim told 9NEWS.
“He told me, two times, if you do something I will kill you.”
The passenger slashed the driver’s hand before stealing about $350 and fleeing the scene.
The offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged 20 to 25-years-old with fair hair and a solid build.

Uber returns to Finnish roads after taxi market deregulation

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Uber Technologies will re-start its ride-hailing business in Finland on Wednesday after a one-year pause, it said, seeking to benefit from the country’s transport law reform.

The U.S. company has come under pressure from traditional taxi drivers and regulators across Europe, who accuse it of unfair competition and skirting traditional licensing rules.

In Finland, Uber was deemed legal provided its drivers held valid taxi licences, but the company has been the target of police investigations and drivers have been ordered to give up their earnings to the state for not having valid permits.
An overhaul of transport legislation came into force on July 1, removing a cap on the number of taxies licences the government issues in a year and fare restrictions, while creating a legal framework for apps such as Uber. Read more

Head-on crash with Uber taxi in Leeds kills four young men

Four young men were killed and two teenage girls seriously injured in a head-on crash between a car and an Uber taxi.

Declan Grove, 19, Matty Walshaw, 18, Brandon Frew, 18, and Caelan Megson, 21, died when their Seat Leon collided with the taxi in the Horsforth area of Leeds at about 2.40am on Saturday.

A 16-year-old girl remained critically ill yesterday. A 17-year-old girl and the 42-year-old Uber driver were taken to hospital with serious injuries. A firefighter called to the scene was understood to have found his own daughter was among the injured.
